Plus Eyes On Young Children

Eyes plus or trouble seeing objects in close proximity can happen to anyone. Plus eyes generally occur in older people. But did you know that plus eyes were not uncommon also experienced by small children?

Plus eyes are also called farsightedness (hypermetropia). The sufferer can see the remote object clearly, but the close object looks vague. Plus eyes are often suffered by adults over the age of 40 years, but there are also small children who have been affected by this vision disorder.

How Does Eye Plus Happen?
Plus eyes occur when the eyeball is too short, the cornea is less curved or too flat, or the lens of the eye cannot focus properly. Therefore, the light that should fall right in the retina just focused on the back of the retina so as to make the close object look blurry. The exact reason why these things can happen is unknown, but a family's default history effects.

Some babies and children suffer from eye plus. This is normal, usually without significant symptoms and will disappear as they get older. Close blindness in children often occurs because the vision organs are still developing. The process of developing a good child's eyes will help the function of vision, as the age of the Little.

Children's Signs Suffer Eyes Plus
Signs of a child with eye plus can be observed from everyday behavior at home or at school. For example, often sitting too close to the television, reading too close, complaining of headaches, often rubbing the eyes, having difficulty or do not like to read, and complained tense eyes. In addition to severe cases, the child's eyes may look cross-eyed.

Dealing with Plus Eyes on Children
Good vision is necessary for child development. Conditions that interfere with the senses of vision can affect various problems in basic skills and activities of children.

Plus eyes on the child can be handled with the use of glasses, contact lenses, or LASIK surgery to sharpen vision. However, not all children with farsightedness need the visualization tool. Usually plus eyes that are less than plus one (+1.00) can still see clearly. That's because the eye muscles that function to focus the vision can still work.

Eyeglasses

Glasses are one of the best visual aids for children. Choosing the right child's sunglasses is very important for children with plus eyes. Here are some tips:

  • Choose frames and lens glasses from anti-scratch plastic for children 2 years of age or younger so as not to be easily damaged or broken because of their activities.
  • You may also consider eyeglasses of polycarbonate that are not easily destroyed especially for very active children. Although more vulnerable scratched than ordinary plastic lenses, this material is more easily broken.
  • Children are advised to be given sunglasses that use hinges per purpose to avoid the eyeglass frames
  • Ropes or eyeglass chains may be necessary to keep the glasses from disappearing or falling off.
  • If the child is big enough, let him choose his own glasses with a suitable size and comfortable. Even so, still follow the advice of an ophthalmologist to avoid the risk of eye mismatch with the lens.

Contact lens

Contact lenses look more current and not obsolete. However, wearing and storing contact lenses is easy and difficult to be bothered. Therefore, contact lenses are considered more suitable for children aged over 12 years. But if Little still want to wear contact lenses, discuss with your eye doctor first and make sure your baby:

  • Know how to clean and store contact lenses properly.
  • Cleaning the contact lenses only with a special liquid.
  • Do not borrow or lend contact lenses.
  • Know when contact lenses should be replaced.
  • Always remove the contact lenses if there are signs of irritation to the eyes.
  • LASIK surgery

Laser surgery (LASIK) was successfully performed to treat eye plus in adults, but this action is not recommended for children. Why? Because the severity of hypermetropia or eye plus can change during childhood until the early twenties. Whereas in adults, about age 21, the growth of the eyeball has stopped.

So far experts have also not fully agreed that LASIK surgery is the best option to deal with eye vision problems in children. To ensure the safety of LASIK surgery in children is still needed further clinical research.

Impact of Eyes Plus on Children
Although mild plus eyes can occur in children and usually resolve itself as the baby grows, the regular eye test is important for children. Why? Because the uncorrected eye plus will cause problems in vision and child growth.

The study concludes that the untreated plus eyes will negatively affect the child's academic achievement, such as slower reading and less reading comprehension. In addition, the eye can also be squint (strabismus), tense, or lazy eye (amblyopia). The crossed eye is when both eyes of the child do not see in the same direction. The lazy eye occurs when the function between one eye and the brain does not work well because the eye is sending a signal that is too blurry, so the brain is more dominant to catch the signal from the other eye.

Let Check Child's Eyes Early
Eye experts recommend that eye checks on children be done early:

  • A newborn baby, to find out if there is a congenital eye disorder.
  • Around the age of 6-12 months, the first complete examination to look for eye health problems and signs of vision problems, such as nearsightedness, nearsightedness (eye plus), or problems with eye movements.
  • At 3 years of age, to test visual acuity that will determine whether they need glasses to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness.
  • Age 5 years, follow-up checks to see sharpness and eye alignment, compare with previous tests, predict child's eye health and potential future eye problems of children.
  • Above 5 years, eye check should be done every year for children who need the help of glasses. Parents are advised to consult an ophthalmologist to check their eyes every two years.
  • Children really need their eyesight to grow, learn and know around. For that, eye examination in children is important to do routinely to detect early abnormalities in the eye and avoid the impact that may arise.
