Medical check-up of employees is a health check performed on employees or prospective employees in a work environment. The medical examination aims to identify and detect it early health problems that may be experienced employee as a result of certain factors in the work environment.

  • Electromagnetic waves. Radiation of electromagnetic waves, such as X-rays, ultraviolet, or infrared can cause disturbances to the skin, as well as the eyes.
  • The danger of biological factors. Included in the biological factors are viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, which can be dispersed in the work environment or transmitted from one worker to another.
  • The dangers of ergonomics. Indirectly, ergonomic factors, such as the preparation of the workplace and seating position settings, can cause health problems such as muscle tension and excessive fatigue.

Type of Medical Check Up Employee
Some types of medical check up employees, among others are:

  • Medical check-up periodically (regular medical check-ups), namely health checks carried out periodically, according to the potential hazards and risks in the work environment. Medical checkups are periodically performed at least once a year.
  • A special medical check-up, a medical examination undertaken to detect the effect of employment on a particular worker or group of workers. A medical check-up is done on:
  • Workers who have an accident or disease requiring treatment for more than 2 weeks.
  • Male and female workers over the age of 40, and workers with disabilities.
  • Workers who are suspected of having a specific health disorder and need special examination as needed.
  • Certain employee groups, such as OGUK for offshore workers, MedEx for pilots, or for commercial drivers.

WARNING:
  • Tell your doctor about medicines, including supplements and herbal products that are being consumed, since chemicals in the drug content can affect the results of medical check-ups.
  • Avoid consuming cold water and exercising before undergoing EKG. Cold water and exercise can affect EKG results.
  • For pregnant women, avoid the type of examination that uses X-rays, because X-ray radiation is at risk of harm to the fetus.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol at least 24 hours before medical check-up as it may affect test results.
  • For smokers, avoid smoking at least an hour before undergoing lung function tests (spirometry) as it will interfere with the results of the examination.
Before Medical Check Up Employee
There are several things that employees or prospective employees need to do before undergoing medical check ups, among others:
  • Fasting for 8-12 hours before undergoing medical check up, depending on the type of examination performed.
  • Get enough sleep at least 6 hours before the medical check-up. Lack of sleep can lead to poor medical check ups related to blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature.
  • Use short-sleeved shirts, making it easier for doctors to access the upper arm to collect blood samples.
  • If ever or is suffering from a health problem, the patient is encouraged to bring the results of previous tests, such as X-rays.

Employee Medical Check Up Procedures
Medical check-up of employees consists of a series of inspection procedures. This type of examination is generally adjusted for age, sex, occupation, and employee health conditions. Employee medical check up procedures include:
  • Examination of medical history. This is the earliest stage in the medical check up process. At this stage, the doctor will ask some things to the patient, such as:
  • Health complaints that may be experienced by patients.
  • Patient health history, including health problems that have been suffered recently or in the past.

Examination of vital signs

  • Physical examination. The doctor will initiate a physical exam by weighing the body and measuring the patient's height. Then, the doctor will do some checks on a number of body parts that include:
  • Head and neck examination. Patients will be asked to open the mouth wide so that doctors can check the condition of the throat and tonsils. Doctors will also check the quality of teeth and gums, ears, nose, eyes, lymph nodes, and thyroid gland.
  • Pulmonary examination. The doctor will use a stethoscope to detect abnormal sounds that may occur in the lung organ.

Neurological examination. To measure muscle strength, body reflexes, and balance that may be impaired.
The doctor will perform the additional examination on the patient. For male patients, will be examined penis and testis to see whether there is infection or inflammation, as well as prostate examination with rectal plug. For female patients, the doctor will perform breast and pelvic examinations.

Supporting investigation. There are several types of investigations in medical check up employees, among others:
  • Laboratory examination. Laboratory tests are done by taking blood, urine, and stool samples. These three samples will be analyzed based on physical appearance, chemical substances contained, and microscopically with the help of a microscope.
  • Blood test. Blood tests are performed to calculate the number of blood cells, chemicals markers of organ function, blood sugar, cholesterol, liver function, and kidney function.
  • Urine test (urinalysis). To detect any disturbance or urinary tract infection. Urine tests can also be a marker of other diseases, such as diabetes.
  • Fecal test. Feces or feces contain bacteria and other substances present in the digestive system. Through the analysis of levels of substances and bacteria in the stool, can be known what happens in the patient's digestive system. This can help doctors diagnose diseases, such as gastroentritis and colitis.
  • Photo Rontgen and ultrasound. X-rays and ultrasounds can produce detailed inner images of the body. X-rays and ultrasound can show the condition of organs in the body, such as lung, heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestines, and bladder, and detect infections or inflammation that may occur in organs.
  • Electrocardiography (EKG). An examination is performed to see electrical activity in the heart and detect heart problems. The doctor will attach about 12-15 electrodes to the chest, arms, and legs of the patient. During the examination, the patient will be laid on the table, while the ECG machine will record the activity of the heart. ECGs are sometimes also performed when the patient performs activities, such as walking or running on a  treadmill.
  • Spirometry.  Spirometry is used to check lung function. This check is performed using a spirometer tool. This tool will record the amount of inhaled air in and out, and measure the patient's breathing rate.
  • Test b color Uta. Some companies may require employees or prospective employees to do a color-blind test. A color-blind test is a very simple examination procedure. The Ishihara method is the most commonly used color-blind test. The patient will be asked to mention the colored numbers inserted between the color dots. If the patient is unable or difficult to see the number, the patient may be suffering from color blindness.
  • Inspections made to employees will be adjusted for age and risk factors or dangers that exist in the work environment.
