Know The Important Functions Of Androgen Hormone In Men And Women

Androgen hormones are commonly referred to as "male hormones". Because, in general, this hormone regulates everything associated with the reproductive organs or male sexual organs. However, the actual androgen hormone is also produced in the female body, although not as much as the male, androgens still have important functions for the female reproductive organs.

Androgen is actually a collection of hormones. The most active and dominant androgen is testosterone. In men, testosterone is produced by the testes. Then there are also other androgen hormones that support the function of testosterone. It's just a lot less than testosterone.

Androgen hormones in the Male Body
Men who have entered puberty will experience physical changes. For example, grow a mustache and beard, upper chest hair, legs and thighs, and public. All this is thanks to the androgen. Androgen hormones also regulate the male reproductive organs. This hormone makes a man interested in couples, interested in sexual behavior, and reproductive organs produce sperm.

When boys have entered adolescence, androgens also play a role in the vocal cords. The vocal cords will become longer and thicker, so the sound becomes heavier. Not only that, androgens also play a role in bone growth, development of muscle thickness and development of organs, the formation of pigment in the skin, oil glands work, to the regeneration of red blood cells.

The function of the testes is controlled by the brain, namely in the pituitary gland ( pituitary ) and hypothalamus. When there is a problem in both parts, it is possible that the body has androgen deficiency, especially testosterone.

Men may experience androgen deficiency, but this condition generally occurs gradually and not suddenly. In contrast to menopause in women, where hormone deficiency occurs suddenly.

When androgen deficiency, especially testosterone, men can experience erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, too difficult concentration and depression. The condition when men lack androgen is called hypogonadism. This condition can be overcome if the cause is known clearly.

Androgen hormones in women
Although androgens are known as "male hormones", the female body also produces androgen hormones. In women, testosterone is produced in the ovaries, along with estrogen which is one of the female hormones. The adrenal glands also produce this hormone.

The amount of testosterone produced by the female body is not as much in the male body. However, its function is not less important, which acts as care, growth, and tissue repair in the female reproductive organs, even affecting female fertility. Just as in the male body, androgen hormones, especially testosterone here also helps form a bone mass and body tissue.

If the female body contains excess androgens, it can cause irregular menstruation or even no menstruation at all. Another disorder is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), in which women become difficult to conceive despite still in child-bearing age. PCOS will lead women to insulin resistance, weight gain, high blood pressure, and increased risk of heart disease.

Excess androgen hormones can also make women experience hirsutism. Its characteristics are the unnecessary hair growth in women, such as a mustache, beard, hair on upper chest, abdomen, and thighs. The hair is also coarse-textured, not smooth as a woman's hair.

The function of androgen hormone is very important, both for men and women. Too high or low levels of androgen hormones can cause interference. If you feel there is a problem related to hormones, immediately consult a doctor to get the right handling.
